Cupcakes are passé and cornets are yesterday’s news. What’s got the west coast buzzing these days is gourmet toast. Yes…that’s right, toast. Just like Starbucks took your normal $.25 coffee and turned it into a $4.50 gourmet delight, so too is toast now going from your home toaster to $4 a slice.
The toast trend has started in San Francisco but up here in Seattle I had several people, within two days, ask me what I’d heard about toast catching fire. At first I thought they literally meant catching fire, but no, they were talking about gourmet slabs of toast with texture and flavor combinations that the mere home cook can’t replicate. And it looks like I wasn’t the only one to notice as word is that Seattle is gearing up for it’s own coffee and toast bars just like San Francisco’s famous “The Mill” and New York is rumored to not be far behind with their own version.
So what do you think, is the toast trend here to stay or will we one day look back with a laugh and say ‘that was so 2014!’
