Happy Friday the 13th! It’s going to be a busy day today. I’ll start at my nonprofit gig and then jump out early and head into the kitchen where four friends and I will bake 500 cupcakes (or perhaps 505 so that we can each have one too!) for charity. There’s a homeless outreach organization here called Heroes for the Homeless and a few years ago the founder decided that on her birthday rather than getting a cake and sharing with friends, she’d prefer to give cupcakes to the city’s homeless. Chefs, individuals, and businesses all around the city donate cupcakes to the event and this year, the event’s fourth, they’re hoping to have 10,000 cupcakes to give away. That’s a whole lot of cupcakes! Last year they managed to get over 6000 cupcakes and my group of friends/fellow chefs and entrepreneurs was one of the top “donors.” So we’ve upped the ante this year and will be up to our elbows in buttercream, chocolate, and sugar this afternoon. Truthfully there are worse ways to spend a Friday!
