The 2nd Annual Small Business Saturday(r), sponsored by American Express, is scheduled for November 26th. With Halloween officially behind us it means that, for many small food business owners, the biggest sales period of the year is heading directly at us like a oncoming train. The idea behind the Small Business Saturday is that it is meant to encourage customers to forgo big box stores and mass manufactured items and to instead shop at small independent retailers. If you happen to be one of these retailers, whether you’re a brick-and-mortar establishment or you sell online, the Small Business Saturday site also offers you a number of ways to promote the event in your store and/or online with your customers. There’s even a chance to win $100 worth of free Facebook advertising for your business!
If the holidays don’t really have an impact on your sales you can still join the movement and pledge to do some holiday shopping at a small business on November 26th. As we small food entrepreneurs know, shopping local is just as important as eating local because the money we make goes directly back into the local economy and any employees we hire are our very own neighbors and not ‘outsourced’ employees thousands of miles away.
So who’s with me? I hope to see you out there with me buying holiday gifts from small businesses on the 26th!
