California recently joined the growing list of states that has a Cottage Food Law or “Baker’s Bill” as these laws are sometimes called. Under these laws, Californian’s who want to produce low-risk food for sale can do so out of their home kitchen which, obviously, makes starting a food business much less cost prohibitive. More information on California and other states’ Cottage Food bills can be found on the Small Food Business Home-Based Business page. Don’t forget, Cottage Food laws vary state-by-state so you need to make sure you fully understand what rules and regulations your state has in place before setting up shop.
