Interesting Farmers’ Market Data From USDA

A new study conducted by the USDA’s Economic Research Service arm found that while farmers’ markets have grown to 8,700 registered markets in 2017 (up from less than 2,000 in 1994), only 5% of consumers shop at farmers’ markets each week.

What’s more, the report found that farmers’ market shopping doesn’t cut drastically into consumers’ shopping behavior, or spend, at supermarkets.

What does this mean for market vendors? There is ample opportunity to increase revenue by trying to drive more visitors to the market. You may see it as the market manager’s responsibility to bring in the customers, but you should be thinking of ways that you can drive traffic too.
