Consumers Worry About Food Purchases Online

online storeA new study by Mintel Research has found that while consumers are more open to purchasing food online than they have been in the past, it’s still somewhat worrisome to them. 53% of the consumers, according to the research, indicated that they’re concerned about the safety of the food that they may purchase online and 78% are concerned about food freshness.

The report goes on to mention that 75% of consumers’ polled prefer to sample something before buying it for the first time – something that is, no doubt, a huge barrier for online sales.

Obviously, we’ve all been hearing that online sales are growing and e-commerce is a place that food providers need to be playing in. But that doesn’t mean that simply setting up a website or listing your product on Amazon is enough. Consumers may be open to buying food online but they’re still weary of it. You need to be thinking about how you can allay your consumers’ worries by giving them transparency into your company and your processes as much as possible. If you’re able to do that, you may very well be one step ahead of your competitors in the e-commerce world and that can open up a huge new revenue stream for you.

One last interesting note from this report that’s worth mentioning. Despite all the time and money spent on marketing by food brands, word of mouth continues to be the #1 trusted source when it comes to consumers’ finding and trying new brands. Never underestimate the power of what your customers are saying about you!
