How’s Your Food Safety Plan Coming Along?

August is right around the corner and, if you’re a small food business in the US, that means that you’re required to have a food safety plan in place as part of the Food Modernization Act. Before you think that you’re too small so this doesn’t apply to you, in fact this August 2018 deadline is actually an additional year extension for super small businesses with less than 500 employees. In short, yes, this does apply to you.

Creating a food safety plan can seem like a daunting task so I was excited to find that the US Food & Drug Administration had created a template that is designed to help walk you through the process. The Food Safety Plan Builder is free and will take you through the 15 criteria that the FDA has deemed is important for safe food manufacturing.

It’s worth noting that the FDA does not require you to use their tool and there are a number of other templates – some free, some at cost – available online. Ultimately though it’s your responsibility to create a plan that is inline with the FDA requirements and is specific to your product type and the facility that you produce food in.
